Dietary Fibersrefer to the part of plant-based food that is not able to be totallybroken down by normal digestive enzymes. Fibers come in manydifferent chemical compositions and are grouped generally on thebasis of their physical and chemical properties, which impact howthey are processed inside the human body. Some of the soluble fibersfound in plant food are called non-starchy, while others are calledcomplex. Fibers can also be extracted from plants, including fruitsand vegetables. While there are many benefits associated with DietaryFibers, both forour bodies and our health, they have potential health hazards aswell.

Non-starchyfibers, especially those that are soluble, have a wide range ofphysiological effects in the human body. These fibers may havenegative effects on cardiovascular systems, but the evidence isunclear. Fibers seem to have some effect on blood pressure and maycontribute to atherosclerosis, the plaques that develop in arterieswalls. However, there is no evidence that dietary fiber alone canprevent the onset of atherosclerosis. In addition to this, fibers mayalso interact with other substances, most notably vitamins, minerals, hormones, cholesterol, and insulin, and interfere with theirbiological activities. In some studies, soluble fibers have beenshown to cause some harm to the kidneys and to increase the risk ofcertain types of cancer.
