Why pixels, not characters?
Google truncates titles and descriptions based on pixel width, not character count. A title full of "i" and "l" fits where one packed with "W" and "M" would not. Pixel measurement is the only way to get it right.
What are the current limits?
Title: about 580 pixels on desktop, 920 on mobile (~60 and ~75 characters average). Meta description: 160 characters on desktop, 120 on mobile. Anything longer gets "…" truncated.
Will Google actually use my meta description?
Not always. Google rewrites descriptions for around 60% of pages based on the search query. Writing a strong one still matters — it's your shot at controlling the snippet when they do use it.
Does the bold highlighting matter?
Yes — Google bolds terms that match the user's query in the live snippet. Use the "Query highlight" field to preview how a searched keyword will appear.
