FAQ
Where do I put the generated sitemap?
Save it as sitemap.xml at the root of your site — `https://yoursite.com/sitemap.xml`. Then add `Sitemap: https://yoursite.com/sitemap.xml` to your robots.txt and submit it in Google Search Console.
What's priority and changefreq?
Hints to crawlers: priority (0.0 to 1.0) relative to other URLs on your site; changefreq (always/hourly/daily/weekly/monthly/yearly/never) how often the content changes. Google largely ignores these, but Bing and smaller engines respect them.
How many URLs can a sitemap hold?
Google's limit: 50,000 URLs or 50MB per file. Beyond that, split into multiple sitemaps referenced from a sitemap index. For small sites (under a few hundred URLs), one file is fine.
Do I need `<lastmod>`?
It helps — Google uses it as a signal for recrawl priority, but only when accurate. If you can't provide real modification dates, omit the field entirely rather than guessing.
