How to Test Ride an Electric Scooter: What to Check

When my friend Rohit asked me to tag along for his first electric scooter test ride last month, I thought I'd just be moral support. Turns out, watching him fumble through his first few minutes on an electric two-wheeler taught me more about what to actually check during a test ride than all the YouTube reviews I'd watched.

Start with the Basics (But Don't Rush Them)

The moment you swing your leg over, take a second to just sit. I know it sounds obvious, but comfort isn't something you can gauge while the salesperson is rattling off specifications. Check if your feet touch the ground comfortably, if the handlebar reach feels natural, and whether the seat supports your back properly during the riding position.

Rohit's first mistake was immediately asking about top speed. The smart move? Start in Eco mode and get a feel for how the scooter responds. Electric acceleration is different; it's instant, silent, and honestly a bit addictive once you get used to it. During my own VIDA test ride, I was surprised by how smooth the power delivery felt, even in the gentlest mode. No jerky starts, no engine vibrations, just clean acceleration that felt perfect for stop-and-go traffic.

Test the Riding Modes as You'd Actually Use Them

Here's where most people get it wrong: they either stick to one mode or randomly cycle through all three without understanding what each does. Spend a few minutes in Eco mode first. This is probably where you'll spend 70% of your daily rides anyway, so see if it has enough punch for your regular routes. Can it handle that small incline near your house? Does it feel confident when you need to merge into traffic?

Then switch to Ride mode for a more balanced experience, and finally Sport mode if you want to see what the scooter can really do. The beauty of something like the VIDA is how easily you can toggle between modes right from the handlebars, no menu diving while you're riding.

Pay Attention to the Display and Range Estimates

Don't get too hung up on the range numbers you see on screen. I learned this the hard way when my display showed 85 km remaining, but I barely managed 6 0km in real-world conditions. Traffic, your riding style, and road conditions all significantly affect range. Instead, focus on whether the display is clear and easy to read while riding, especially in bright sunlight.

The range estimator will jump around based on how you're riding, so don't panic if it drops suddenly when you accelerate hard. What matters is whether you can easily see your speed, current mode, and other essential info without taking your eyes off the road for too long.

Test the Features That Matter Daily

Regenerative braking is one of those things that sounds great in theory but needs to feel natural in practice. Try both light regeneration (when you ease off the throttle) and stronger regen (by twisting the throttle slightly backward). It should feel like a gentle slowdown, not an abrupt stop.

If the scooter has reverse mode, definitely test it. Trust me, being able to back out of tight parking spots without getting off the scooter is a game-changer in Indian cities. The VIDA's reverse feature activates when you press both brakes, simple enough that you won't forget how to use it when you actually need it.

Don't Ignore the Little Things

Check how the scooter handles slow-speed manoeuvring. Can you easily navigate through narrow gaps? How does it feel when you're filtering through traffic? These aren't glamorous tests, but they matter more than hitting 80 kmph on an empty stretch.

Also, pay attention to the build quality. Are there any rattles or squeaks? Do the switches feel solid? Does key fob detection work reliably on a keyless model?

The Real Test

Here's my honest advice: don't just take one quick spin around the showroom. Ask for a longer test ride that includes the kind of roads you'll actually use daily, city traffic, a small incline, maybe even a short highway stretch if possible.

The goal isn't to fall in love with the scooter in 10 minutes. It's to make sure there are no deal-breakers and that the scooter fits your real-world needs. Because once you take it home, you'll be living with those quirks and features every single day.
